For every evaluation type, a set of specific research methods and instruments has been developed. The research methods and instruments are chosen according to the objectives of the evaluation, the type and the scale of the project that is being evaluated according to the questions the evaluation is trying to answer, with the socio-economic and organizational context and according to the available budget and the research capacity. The approach most often used is the multi-method approach, a functional combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods and instruments. The present article investigates the research methods used in program evaluation, with a specific focus on the quantitative methods. It tries to identify whether there is a specific pattern for the choice of the research methods in the evaluation of different types of programs.
